- What are Prebiotics?
Prebiotics are products which are naturally available or prepared to ensure that our Gut has the right ecosystem of soluble and insoluble fiber, that helps in the propogation of healthy bacteria. Baobab is one of the best known prebiotics and we use it to fortify our pickles, dates and tamarind chutney and even Zaatar.
- What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are healthy, living bacteria that help us build immunity and fight inadverdent infections. Our Gut has more than a kilo of healthy bacteria. Kefir, both Water Kefir and Milk Kefir have upto 60 bacterial strains as compared to Yogurt / Curd which has about 3 to 4 strains. Diversity may however vary from each culture.
- What is Kombucha?
Kombucha is fermented Tea. It is prepared with a Scoby (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) and a starter pack. Antima Comidas makes second ferments of Kombucha to counter its sour, tart taste.
- Why are fermented products healthy?
Fermented products like Sauerkraut, Kvass, Kimchi are rich in probiotics. They help in the proliferation of healthy bacteria in our Gut.
- How much Kefir or Kombucha can I consume?
Healthy adults can start wit about 100 ml per day and go up to 300 ml per day over a course of time. Typically, increase intake over a period of 3 months. Children can start with one spoon and go up to 50 ml over a course of 3 months. Every individual find their own comfort quantity.
- Can pregnant women and breastfeeding women consume Kefir?
Generally, YES. These are a rich source of probiotics. However, it is always better to obtain consent from your doctor, physician, nutritionist or dietician before you start consuming these products.
- How do I build immunity
Immunity is built over a period of time. A single dose or a few weeks are not sufficient to build immunity. The consumption of prebiotics, probiotics and fermented products are not the only factor that helps build immunity. A generally healthy lifestyle certainly helps. However, changes are generally noticed in 4 to 6 weeks.
- Are these recommended for weight loss or lowering cholesterol?
These are not medicines that are prescribed. These are good for the gut and a healthy gut solves several problems. A quick search on the Internet about the benefits of prebiotics and probiotics, in reputed medican journals would throw more light on such specific questions.
- Can I learn to do this on my own?
If you meet all the requirements to become a partner kitchen and agree to the terms and conditions of such an association, a resource center would be made accessible to make these products in your own kitchen. For commercial purposes, Antima Comidas would still retain the branding rights.
- Can I subscribe to a regular plan?
Most certainly. If you are clear about your requirements, we are happy to curate a plan for you. Some of our regular customers even mix and match their needs to have more options and diversity. We are happy to curate such plans.
